Australian family of Sri Lankan origin reported missing after Nepal floods

A family of four originally from Jaffna and now living in Australia has been reported missing following severe flooding in Nepal, according to Australian media reports.

The missing family members were identified as 47-year-old Chandrasekaran Muralidharan, his 42-year-old wife Shailaja Muralidharan, and their sons Ashwin, 14, and Aarush, 11.

They were reportedly travelling with a Himalayan Glacier Adventure group alongside 15 other Australians when communication with the group was lost.

Relatives said the family had travelled to Nepal for a holiday involving trekking in the mountainous region between Nepal and Tibet.

Shailaja was reportedly speaking by telephone with her mother while the family was having breakfast shortly before all communication ceased.

Australian media reported that at least 44 Australians are currently missing following the floods, including the 15 travellers who were with the Jaffna-origin family.

Authorities are continuing efforts to establish the whereabouts of those missing.
