CAA conducts 119 raids on sale of Buddhist monastic requisites

The Consumer Affairs Authority has conducted 119 special raids across Sri Lanka to inspect the sale of Atapirikara and other Buddhist monastic requisites.

The CAA said the inspections were carried out to protect consumers and ensure traders complied with legal requirements.

Officials checked whether products and packaging displayed the required information and examined receipts, invoices and other records that traders are required to maintain.

The authority said officers seized 436 items, including Atapirikara sets, robes, adanakada, alms bowls and other Pirikara items, over alleged violations.

CAA officers also randomly opened Atapirikara sets to inspect their contents.

The inspections uncovered several irregularities, including single-layer robes being supplied instead of double-layer robes, incomplete Atapirikara sets and variations in their contents depending on price.

Officials also found aluminium alms bowls, dented bowls and rusted razor blades among the items inspected.

The CAA said it would take further legal action against traders found to have violated consumer protection laws.
