EDB seeks to unlock Sri Lanka’s high-value graphite potential

The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) is stepping up efforts to expand the country’s graphite exports by promoting value addition, attracting investment and opening new international markets, officials said.

As part of the initiative, EDB officials recently visited Bogala Graphite Lanka PLC to study the company’s entire graphite production process, from underground mining and ore extraction to processing, grading, purification and preparation for export.

The visit is expected to help the EDB develop strategies to strengthen Sri Lanka’s mineral export performance and position the country as a preferred supplier of high-value graphite products.

Minerals and mineral-based products have been identified as a priority export sector under the National Export Development Plan (NEDP), which recognises the potential of Sri Lanka’s mineral resources to diversify exports and increase foreign exchange earnings through value addition.

Sri Lanka is the only country reported to commercially produce natural crystalline vein graphite, known for its high carbon purity and distinctive crystalline structure. The mineral is used in industrial applications including lubricants, carbon brushes, brake pads and refractories, as well as emerging graphene technologies.

Bogala Graphite, which has more than 160 years of mining experience, has built an international reputation for supplying premium natural vein graphite and has invested in modern processing technologies and sustainable mining practices.

During the visit, EDB officials held discussions with the company’s management on challenges facing the industry and possible measures to expand the sector.

The EDB said closer cooperation among government agencies, mining companies, research institutions and international technology partners would be crucial to developing advanced graphite products.

It said greater investment in research, processing technology and international marketing could increase export revenues, create skilled employment and strengthen Sri Lanka’s position in global graphite markets.
