IPA World Congress opens in Colombo

The 69th World Congress of the International Police Association (IPA) began at Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo on Wednesday (21), with Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath attending as Chief Guest.
The Congress, being held from October 20 to 25, has brought together more than 400 delegates from 69 countries. It is the first time the IPA World Congress is being held in an Asian country.
The IPA is a non-governmental organisation with more than 600,000 members worldwide. It promotes social, cultural and professional friendship among serving and retired police officers under its motto, “Servo per Amikeco” or “Service Through Friendship”.
IPA World President Martin Hoffmann is leading the organisation, while the Sri Lanka Section is headed by Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasuriya.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Herath welcomed the delegates on behalf of the Government and the people of Sri Lanka and stressed the importance of international cooperation in combating cross-border crime, organised criminal networks and emerging challenges in law enforcement.
He also invited the delegates to experience Sri Lanka’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, hospitality and local traditions during their stay.
The Congress will be followed by the IPA Friendship Week from October 25 to 31. Delegates will take part in a tour programme covering the country’s cultural heritage, ancient cities, historical sites, natural landscapes, cuisine and traditions.
