Over 100 kg of heroin recovered from southern coast

More than 100 kg of heroin was recovered from Kapparathota Beach in Weligama in southern Sri Lanka during a joint security operation, police officials said on Thursday.
The narcotics were found packed in 120 packets concealed inside six sacks, according to the Police Special Task Force.
The recovery was made during an operation involving the Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Coast Guard, Police Narcotics Bureau and Police Special Task Force.
The search was launched following an investigation linked to the interception of a fishing trawler two days earlier.
Information obtained during that operation led authorities to suspect that a consignment of contraband had been transferred to the coastline.
Those believed to have been involved had left the area before security forces arrived, and no suspects or vessel were found at the recovery site, officials said.
The recovered items have been taken for further examination, while investigations are continuing to determine the exact quantity and circumstances surrounding the narcotics consignment.
