Amarapura Maha Nikaya celebrates 217 years of Noble Service
The Monastic Fraternity of the Amarapura Maha Nikaya held a commemoration ceremony of the founding Theros at the BMICH on July 8th. Held under the patronage of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the Maha Nikaya was celebrating 217 years of noble service to the Sambuddha Sasanya.
The Most Ven. Agga Maha Panditha Kotugoda Dhammawasa Nayaka Thero of the Amarapura Maha Nikaya is the current Supreme Leader of the Amarapura Maha Nikaya. The Maha Nayaka and Anu Nayaka Theros of the Amarapura Maha Nikaya, Maha Secretary Theros, Contributing Council of the Sri Lanka Amarapura Maha Nikaya, Ambassadors and dignitaries from both the clergy and the laity were present at the commemoration.
Founded in 1800 in Amarapura, Burma, the Nikaya has now expanded to 3351 temples through 22 sub-sectors in Sri Lanka and 48 foreign temples.
At the commemoration a Directory of all temples belonging to the Amarapura Nikaya was presented to the Most Ven. Agga Maha Panditha Kotugoda Dhammawasa Nayaka Thero’s, along with the first copy of the biography of the Ven. Thero. While the directory was compiled by the ‘Urumayaka Ulpatha’ Foundation over a period of a year and edited by R A D Sirisena, the biography of the Ven. Maha Nayaka Thero was written by Upali Samarasinghe. Dialog Axiata published the directory and also organised the ceremony.
