Cementing Sri Lanka –China Partnership
In December 2017, 50 Chinese couples said “I do”, in Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo. The mass wedding was held to celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and China.
While some of the couples chose their traditional wedding attire, others wore Western dress, while others robed themselves in traditional Sri Lankan clothes.
The couples also followed the Sri Lankan Buddhist wedding ritual of having their fingers tied together and water poured over, as a sign of unity and purity.
The ceremony not only celebrated diplomatic relations, it was also a boost for the country’s tourism industry.
Of late, China has entered Sri Lanka in a big way, pumping in hundreds of millions of dollars into major infrastructure projects. China has Colombo as partner in its “One Belt One Road” initiative.
