The Ministry of Science and Technology will launch a special programme in Pettah on Tuesday (28) to inspect the standards and quality of consumer goods sold in the market.

Science and Technology Minister Chrishantha Abeysena said officials would examine food products, electrical appliances, toys and other goods at the Pettah public market.

The inspections will determine whether the products comply with required standards. Officials will also test food items for substances that could be harmful to human health.

Representatives from the Sri Lanka Standards Institution, the Industrial Technology Institute and other agencies under the ministry will take part in the programme.

The ministry will inform consumers about the quality of products available in the market and educate traders and entrepreneurs about applicable safety and quality standards, Abeysena said.

The programme forms part of activities organised for National Integrity Week.
