The Association of Medical Specialists (AMS) has warned that an Omicron wave in Sri Lanka is not too far away.
Forty -seven people in the country have been found to be infected so far with the Omicron variant even with the limitations to sequencing capacity.
Because the transmission of Omicron, first reported to the World Health Organisation from South Africa in November last year, is more efficient medical specialists warn that it will infect more people and hospitals will be overwhelmed with the sheer number of patients.
The AMS is asking people to take the booster dose without delay and to strictly adhere to health guidelines.
‘The only way to tackle this wave would be to get vaccinated, wear a mask, keep a safe distance, open windows for adequate ventilation, clean your hands and cough and sneeze safely’, said the AMS in a statement. ‘ We need to continue to take all above precautions even after taking vaccine doses’.
