The Colombo High Court today decided to refuse preliminary objections raised by SJB Parliamentarian Patali Champika Ranawaka in connection with the hit-and-run accident that took place in 2016 at Rajagiriya.

The defence had raised preliminary objections challenging the maintainability of the indictments. While rejecting the preliminary objections raised by defence, High Court Judge Namal Balalle fixed the case for trial on June 17. The prosecution witnesses of the case were notified to appear before court at the next trial date.

In this case (first case), the indictments were filed against Patali Champika on charges of causing grievous injury to a youth named Sandeep Sampath while driving a vehicle in a reckless manner.

The second case comprising 16 charges was filed against Patali Champika, his driver ThusithDilum Kumara and former officer In Charge (OIC) of the Welikada Police Station, Assistant Superintendent of Police Sudath Asmadala on charges of fabricating false evidence, conspiracy of fabricating evidence and submitting false reports to the Court.
