China has signalled to Sri Lanka that the negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) may impact the talks with China to secure a loan of US$2.5 billion.

According to media reports, Ambassador Qi Zhenhong has indicated that China was keeping tabs on the negotiations to understand the strings attached to the deal with the IMF.

Qi Zhenhong has also said that China’s support for Sri Lanka is for the people.

He qualified the statement by saying, “It is not for any particular party or government”.
