The Criminal Investigation Department has arrested SJB Trade Union Leader Ananda Palitha for making a controversial statement over the remaining fuel stocks of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation.

Mr Palitha threw a challenge to the Energy Minister to prove if he was wrong. He also made several other revelations that would not augur well for the Minister or the government.

Ceylon Petroleum Corporation Chairman, however, disputed the figures revealed by the Tarde Union leader and said that legal action would be taken against him under the Penal Code for misleading the public by giving false statistics. Following the statements made by the authorities and the trade unionist concerning the available fuel stocks in the country, long queues were seen outside fuel stations predicting an imminent shortage.
