The Sri Lanka Navy has apprehended five suspects with over 290 kilograms of heroin hidden in a multi-day trawler off the Coast of Beruwala, in Sri Lankan waters. The street value of the stock is around Rs 2321 million.
The Navy conducted the operation, coordinated by special intelligence units on the 30th of August. The search operation began off the seas of Tangalle after the Narcotics Bureau had received credible information of the smuggling bid of the consignment of heroin to Sri Lanka.
According to Naval sources, the suspects and the multi-day trawler was hauled ashore this morning from the seas off Beruwala. The mooring point of the trawler, identified as the Beruwala fisheries harbour.
The multi-day fishing trawler had left shores on the 30th and assumed the heroin stock, may have been transferred, in the mid seas in the international waters.
The five suspects, aged between 31 and 37, have been identified as residents of the Ahungalla, Balapitiya and Habaraduwa areas.
Navy and the Police Narcotics Bureau are conducting further investigations.
