State minister Lohan Ratwatte stepped down as the Minister-in-charge of Prisons after Prime Minister telephoned him from Italy and asked him to step down.

The Prime Minister has also called the President and told the President that Lohan Ratwatte should resign. Ratwatte this morning has submitted his resignation to the President.

Ratwatte, accused of misbehaving inside the Welikada Prisons and at the Anuradhapura Prisons, allegedly used abusive language to the officials on duty.

At the Anuradha Pura Prison, he ordered some LTTE detainees out of the cell and made them kneel and threatened to kill them at gunpoint.

He was purportedly under the influence of liquor at the time of the incident.

The Minister, accompanied by several friends clad in short trousers, entered the prison premises allegedly by using force. Social media posts said that a beauty queen also visited the prison premises along with
