President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has appointed the Ven Muruththettuwe Ananada Thera as the Chancellor of the Colombo University.
The appointment is effective from the 17th of this month.
Emeritus Archbishop Rt. Rev Dr Oswald Gomis, who held the position of Chancellor, has tendered his resignation due to ill health.
Meanwhile, the University Students Federation of Colombo University has expressed its opposition to the appointment of Ven Muruththettuwe Ananada Thera as the Chancellor of the University.
In a letter to the President, the Student’ Federation has said that such prestigious positions should be held by illustrious personalities with no political affiliations. They also said the government should refrain from appointing politically biased people to hold such symbolic positions.
