The Inspector-General of Police today informed the Court of Appeal that moves are underway to bring underworld figure Janith Madushankaalias ‘Podi Lassi’ before a Magistrate Court as soon as his detention order expires.

The IGP, through the Attorney General, informed the Court of Appeal that the detention order of Podi Lassie will expire by the 15th of December and will be produced before a Magistrate accordingly.

Podi Lassie had filed a writ petition seeking an order directing the authorities to ensure his security while being detained at Boossa Prison.

The petitioner had cited Boossa Prison Superintendent, Chief Jailor of the Boossaprison, Prison Commissioner General and Attorney General as respondents in the case.

Janith Madushanka had filed this writ petition through his lawyer, seeking an order directing the prison authorities to provide adequate security.

The petitioner said that he was invoking the jurisdiction of the Court as there were serious threats to his life. The petition further stated that the respondents are duty-bound to ensure the safety of inmates held in prison custody.

Podi Lassi had is a suspect in a case filed against him over the death threats made in public at the Boossa Prison against the President, the Defence Secretary and certain high-ranking officers of the Prisons Department.
