On Friday night, residents of Colombo became alarmed to see a huge military and police presence around the city. Authorities have yet to clearly explain why the security measures have been put in place, despite the apparent increase in security personnel.
The increased presence has spawned theories and conjectures among the populace, with some believing it may be related to an impending political transition that may occur over the weekend.
However, police said that it was an effort to stem criminal activities in the country that had taken a back seat during the past year due to the political situation in the country.
