The Group of Seven summits wrapped up in the western Japanese city of Hiroshima, the first city in the world to be attacked with an atomic bomb back in 1945. Japan invited the G-7 leaders and guests to the peace memorial, with the city’s legacy of nuclear destruction providing a symbolic backdrop for the summit.

 

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida made a historic joint visit to a World War II memorial, the latest sign of warming Tokyo-Seoul ties.

 

But the biggest attraction was the appearance of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He also met with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which is among the countries that have been reluctant to condemn Russia.

 

Among the key themes under discussion were upholding the international order based on the rule of law and outreach to the so-called Global South
