South Korea will evacuate tens of thousands of scouts by bus from a coastal jamboree site as Tropical Storm Khanun looms, officials said Monday.
More than 1,000 vehicles will be used starting Tuesday morning to move 36,000 scouts—mostly teenagers—from the World Scout Jamboree in the southwestern county of Buan, according to Kim Sung-ho, a vice minister at South Korea’s Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
Most of the scouts, who come from 158 countries, will be accommodated at venues in the capital city, Seoul, and the nearby metropolitan area, he said.
Meanwhile, Chief Commissioner of Sri Lanka Scout Association Janaprith Fernando said that the Jamboree Organisers, together with the Government of the Republic of Korea, announced today afternoon at a meeting of the Heads of Contingents of countries attending the 25th World Scout Jamboree that all 37,000 participants currently at the Jamboree grounds Will be evacuated to permanent buildings close to Seoul due to Typhoon Khanun, which is expected to reach South Korea on August 9th. All jamborites will be in safe accommodation from August 8th to August 11th until the closing ceremony, where all jamborites will meet once again.
