Fifty-four Sri Lankan domestic workers who were stranded in Kuwait without visas arrived in the country this morning (16) with the intervention of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Kuwait.
There were 53 female domestic workers and one male domestic worker in the group.
Most of these domestic workers are from the Anuradhapura district, and the rest are residents of Polonnaruwa, Moneragala, Galle, and Matara districts.
They had run away from their contracted workplaces and worked for a long time in other places in the State of Kuwait for higher wages.
Accordingly, these people had registered at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in the State of Kuwait to come to Sri Lanka, and then the embassy officials had worked together with the Criminal Investigation Department, the police, and the courts to prepare temporary passports and thus deport these Sri Lankans from the country.
