The side mirrors of two vehicles belonging to former Inspector General of Police Chandra Fernando were removed when they were parked opposite his house at Udyana Road, Bambalapitiya, on Sunday.
Bambalapitiya police said that a police constable is on duty round the clock at the post opposite his house, which has been set up for the security of the former IGP.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the robbery took place when an apprentice police officer who was on duty left for the barracks at 5 a.m. on Sunday. However, he is supposed to leave the post at 6 a.m.
He has been interdicted as he failed to wait until the officer on duty for the day shift reached there.
