The Ceylon Electricity Board says that gross power generation from thermal power plants has increased to 65%, while hydropower generation capacity is below 15 per cent due to the dry spell in the country.
CEB says that the water capacity of the main reservoirs is going down drastically due to this situation. The water capacity of the Samanalawewa reservoir was only 1% by yesterday evening, while Victoria and Castlereigh had 25% and 21% water capacity, respectively.
The engineers have already informed the management that all reservoirs in the country will only produce 300 gigawatt-hours in the coming weeks if the dry weather continues.
They have informed the management that water levels in reservoirs will be sufficient only for 4 weeks unless catchment areas don’t get adequate rainfall within a few days.
