President Ranil Wickremesinghe has appointed a three-member committee to investigate the allegations in the documentary telecast by British television Channel 4 over the Easter Sunday attacks that claimed 260 lives.
The committee, led by retired Judge of the Supreme Court Justice S.I. Imam, comprises retired Air Force Commander A.C.M. Jayalath Weerakkody and Harsha A.J. Soza PC as members.
This 50-minute documentary makes serious allegations about the attacks based on the testimonies of whistleblowers. They alleged that senior government officials were involved in these attacks, which targeted several leading Catholic churches and luxury hotels.
In the documentary, the main whistleblower, Azad Maulana, says that he witnessed a meeting in Puttlam in 2018 between the suicide bombers and a senior intelligence officer in the country before the Easter Sunday attacks.
Maoulana was a spokesman for the LTTE breakaway group, the Pillayan faction, led by Road Development State Minister Sivanesaturai Chandarakanthan, alias Pillayan.
Moulana in this documentary claimed that Mahinda Rajapaksa’s administration had formed a clandestine death squad called the ‘Tripoli Platoon’ with the support of Pillayan’s group to crack down on anti-government media persons.
