The Sri Lanka Navy yesterday cleared the blockage under the Wakwella Bridge, which is over the Gin River in Galle, ensuring the free flow of water downstream.
Following heavy rains, tree remains and other debris carried by the raging waters of the Gin River were collected under the Wakwella Bridge, hampering the smooth flow of river water. Remaining alert to these developments, the Southern Naval Command cleared the blockage beneath the bridge, averting a possible flood threat in the area.
Accordingly, a team of Navy divers and members of the Rapid Action Boat Squadron (RABS) from the Southern Naval Command were mobilised to remove the obstruction beneath the Wakwella Bridge. The effort was well supported by the Irrigation Department and Disaster Management Centre. Their swift action ensured that river water could continue to flow downstream without interruption, effectively preventing a potential flood hazard in the region.
