The Court of Appeal today issued notices on several respondents including IGP returnable for May 18 in connection with another writ petition filed over the demolition of the King’s Court built during the period of King Buvanekabah the second in Kurunegala.

The Court of Appeal two-judge-bench comprising Justice (President) Arjuna Obeysekera and Justice Mayadunna Corea made this order consequent to a writ petition filed by former JVP Parliamentarian NamalKarunaratne.

In its original writ petition, the petitioner had sought an order directing the police to arrest Kurunegala Mayor for the demolition of the King’s Court.

However, it was subsequently revealed that the Court of Appeal has already issued an Interim Order staying the operation of the arrest warrants issued by Kurunegala Magistrate’s Court against KurunegalaMayor and four others in connection with this incident.

Filing this petition through counsel Sunil Watagala, the petitioner had named Acting IGP C.D. Wickramaratne, OIC of Headquarters Police Station in KurunegalaKapila Adhikari, Director General of Archaeology Prof. Senarath Dissanayake, the Mayor of KurunegalaMunicipal Council Thushara Sanjeewa, KurunegalaMunicipal Council and Attorney General as respondents in the petition.
