The Attorney General has filed two separate appeals in the Supreme Court challenging the order of the Colombo High Court Trial-at-Bar bench to acquit former IGP Pujith Jayasundaraand former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando from the charges levelled against them in connection with the Easter Sunday attack cases.
On February 18, The Colombo High Court Trial-at-Bar ordered the acquittal of two accused from the charges, on the basis that the prosecution evidence has failed to establish the commission of the offences against accused as per the indictments.
Colombo Trial-at-Bar bench comprising High Court Judges Namal Balalle (President), Adithya Patabendige and Mohamed Ishadeenhad ordered the acquittal of two former top officials from two separate cases, without calling for defence evidence.
The Attorney General had filed indictments consisting of 855 charges against former IGP Pujith Jayasundara and former DefenceSecretary Hemasiri Fernando for their failure to prevent the terrorist attacks between April 7, 2019 and April 21, 2019.
