AG to indict Suspects in the X-press Pearl vessel disaster

The Attorney General today informed Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court that the indictments would be filed in the High Court against the suspects in connection with the fire-ravaged container ship, X-Press Perl vessel.
Senior State Counsel Lakmini Girihagamaappearing for the Criminal Investigations, Department told the court that the indictments against the suspects responsible for the tragedy, will be filed upon the completion of the investigations into the incident.
SSC Girihagama further said that the Marine Environment Protection Authority has already appointed an expert committee to determine the damages caused to the marine environment in the country.
Five suspects, including the Captain of the fire-ravaged container ship MV X-Press Perl and four other directors of the Local Agent of X-Press Perl vessel, were named as suspects in this case. They are currently out on bail. The further magisterial inquiry into the matter was fixed for September 6 by Additional Magistrate LochaniAbeywickrema.
