JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake has filed lawsuits in the Colombo District Court claiming Rs. 20 billion as damages from Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam, Parliamentarian Tissa Kuttiarachchi, and Power House Limited for allegedly making defamatory statements and publishing.
During a public meeting held in Colombo on August 19, SLPP General Secretary MP Sagara Kariyawasam and MP Tissa Kuttiarachchi allegedly made remarks against the National People’s Power (NPP) over its alleged investments in the island nation of Malta.
The JVP leader alleged that the defamatory and baseless allegations made against him by Sagara Kariyawasam and Tissa Kuttiarachchi had been telecasted on the Ada Derana prime-time news bulletin on August 19, without verifying the truthfulness of the statements.
Anura Kumara Dissanayaka alleged that the defendants had the intention to defame him when making the said defamatory statements and subsequently publishing them in the media.
The JVP leader further said that statements made by two parliamentarians to the public were unfounded, absolutely false, baseless, malicious, and in themselves defamatory. He further stated that statements made by the two parliamentarians had been made with the intention of tarnishing the JVP leader’s reputation.
He further said that by reason of the defamatory statements or news publications, the plaintiff suffered grave injury and loss to his good name and reputation. He further said he has been brought into and exposed to public contempt, ridicule, humiliation, and hatred.
