JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake today informed the UN resident representative in Sri Lanka, Marc Andre Franch, that the government has deprived the people of their democratic rights by postponing the election indefinitely.
Dissanayake said the government is acting undemocratically by threatening to summon judges to the Privileges Committee of Parliament, which ordered the government to hold elections.
The UN resident representative called on Dissanayake at the JVP headquarters in Battaramulla this morning.
The JVP leader pointed out that the people are being further oppressed due to the failure of the government’s economic goals. The Peace and Development Adviser at the Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Edward Rees, and former parliamentarian Bimal Rathnayake were present.
