Over 3000 employees of the Bandaranaike International Airport ground staff staged a protest campaign this morning, demanding salary increments.

These employees, belonging to a number of trade unions, launched this protest opposite the VIP lounge of the airport. They said that they received their last salary increment in 2018, even though BIA employees are entitled to have a salary increment once every three years. They said that Airports and Aviation Services (Pvt) Limited has earned a profit of Rs 4800 million this year after paying all the taxes, and another Rs 1000 million has been credited to the treasury.

The employees said that they bear the expenses of maintaining other airports in the country that are running without making any profits.
