The Black Cap Movement that launched a series of non-violent protest campaigns based on the #GotaGoHome social media campaign has decided to initiate ‘Aragalaya 4.0’ to fulfil the unfulfilled demands drafted alongside the ‘GotaGoHome,’ campaign.

In a statement, the Black Cap movement stated that this generation has symbolically succeeded in ousting an Executive President through the ‘GotaGoHome,’ campaign.

The movement decided to vacate the Galle Face protest site since it had achieved its primary objective.

The Black Cap Movement said they are poised to extend their activities into a broader socio-political space.

Black Cap Movement initiated the candlelight vigil held on March 1, 2022, at the Kohuwala Junction in response to an inefficient regime headed by the Seventh Executive President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

This peaceful series of micro protests commenced from Kohuwala and expanded to other parts of Colombo and the suburbs.

This non-violent protest model then succeeded in attracting women in the middle-class segments through a series of protests titled ‘Kitchen Lament’ that kicked off after May 9.

The April 9 protest at the Galle Face Green proved to the world how people could achieve their demands through a non-violent protest. The next step would be to fulfil the unfulfilled objectives in the draft alongside the ‘GotaGoHome,’ campaign, and as such, this protest requires a new phase to bring about these reforms.

These demands are in the declaration, Beyond Galle Face, drafted following discussions with various stakeholders at the Galle Face protest site held from April 12 to May 12, a statement said.

The Black Cap Movement said it is looking forward to joining hands with civil society and political movements to achieve objectives through ‘Aragalaya 4.0
