The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court today ordered the release of former Deputy Minister SaranaGunawardena from eight corruption cases following the Bribery Commission’s decision not to proceed with them.

The Bribery Commission had filed eight corruption cases against former Deputy Minister SaranaGunawardena over an incident where former Deputy Minister had allegedly secured public funds when obtaining vehicles on rent for the National Lotteries Board, while he was serving as the Chairman of the Board.

The Bribery Commission informed court that the commission would not proceed with the cases since cases have been filed without the written sanction of the two Commissioners of the Bribery Commission.

Accordingly, former Deputy Minister was ordered to be released from eight corruption cases by Chief Magistrate Buddhika Sri Ragala.

The Bribery Commission alleged that the accused had committed the offences between 2006 and 2007 while he was serving as the Chairman of National Lotteries Board.
