General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers Association Mahinda Jayasinghe is critical of the government over a remark made by Cabinet Spokesman and Minister, Keheliya Rambukwella.

Rambukwella recently described the teachers that withdrew from providing online lessons to the children as scoundrels.

Jayasinghe has queried the government whether it was the official position taken by the government as regards the teachers are concerned. He snapped back saying, that the entire country is aware of who the scoundrels are.

Explaining the circumstances under which they were operating, Jayasinghe said the Online classes for children was a brainchild of the teachers themselves. They voluntarily initiated the programme without help from the government.

He contrasted the teachers from politicians stating that the politicians are the ones who have abused and misused the financial resources of the country for personal benefit. Contrary to that teachers, are doing a yeoman service to the student population when there are still unresolved issues relating to their remuneration.

The teacher withdrew from online classes after the President of the CTU was arbitrarily detained by the Police at a quarantine centre.
