Civil activist Chirantha Amarasinghe has filed a Fundamental Rights petition in the Supreme Court seeking an order preventing police from arresting him over a number of incidents.
The petitioner said he received information that police are conducting investigations to arrest him over incidents relating to the Galle Face protest that took place on July 9 and covering a protest organized by Attorney-at-Law Nagananda Kodituwakku. He maintained that there is no legal basis for the commencement or continuation of any investigation against him, violating his fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution.
The petitioner named as respondents the Fort Worth Police OIC, the Inspector General of Police, and the Attorney General.
