Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court today declined to issue an order banning a protest organized by Inter-University Student’s Federation (IUSF) and several trade unions at Polduwa junction in Battaramulla.
Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawala observed that the people have a right to engage in peaceful protests without causing disturbances to the public.
Welikada Police submitted to court that Parliamentary Privileges entitled to parliamentarians could be violated if the protesters carried out a protest that was to be held today near Polduwa junction.
The Additional Magistrate observed that protesters have a right to engage in a peaceful protest without causing any disturbance to the public.
However, the Additional Magistrate observed that police can take necessary action in accordance with the police ordinance if the protesters created any obstruction and annoyance to the public or traffic flow.
