The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court today directed the Borella Police to conclude the investigation into the death of a three-year-old boy while receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital (LRH) due to an infection following a kidney surgery.

Colombo Additional Magistrate Rajindra Jayasuriya ordered Borella Police to summon paediatrician Dr. Malik Samarasinghe to give evidence in the postmortem inquiry into the death of the child.

The Borella Police informed the court that they were unable to record a statement from Dr. Samarasinghe due to his preparation to travel abroad.

Accordingly, the Additional Magistrate ordered Borella Police to summon Dr. Malik Sanmarasinghe to give evidence in the case on August 31 and also further ordered Borella Police to conduct further investigations into the death based on the medical reports and evidence presented so far.

Baby Mohammed Hamdhi, a resident of the Kotahena area, died on July 28 while receiving treatment at Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital (LRH) due to an infection following a kidney surgery.

The Borella Police told the court that, in accordance with the JMO report, the child had been born with only one kidney.

It is reported that the doctors have diagnosed the child with acute kidney disease and have recommended removing the left kidney. But the parents of the child stated that the doctors later told them that the healthy right kidney was also removed during the operation.
