The Court of Appeal has ordered the Surveyor General and the Inspector General of Police to make necessary arrangements to physically demarcate the boundaries of the Muthurajawela Sanctuary.
The Court of Appeal further ordered the authorities to provide necessary assistance and protection to ensure the erection of informatory hoardings on the boundaries of the Muthurajawela Sanctuary. The Inspector General of Police was ordered to take steps to prevent any unlawful construction or development work within the Muthurajawela Sanctuary.
The Court of Appeal Justice Sobhitha Rajakaruna and Justice Dammika Ganepola made this order when the writ petition filed by Centre for Environmental Justice was taken up for delivery of judgment. The Court also decided to terminate case proceedings since the relief prayed by the petitioner has been addressed adequately.
In their petition, the Centre for Environmental Justice and its Executive Director Withanage Don Hemantha Ranjith Sisira Kumara named the Central Environmental Authority, Minister of Environment, Minister of WildLife and Forest Conservation and nine others as respondents.
The petitioners sought an interim order directing the respondents to stay any further dumping of waste and the filling of lands within the Muthurajawela Sanctuary.
