The Court of Appeal has issued an interim order suspending the directives given by the Director General of Health Services to temporarily suspend kidney transplant surgeries at the Western Hospital.
The committee appointed to look into the alleged kidney racket had earlier recommended the temporary suspension of kidney transplant surgeries at the Western Infirmary Hospital.
The Court of Appeal’s two-judge bench, comprising Justices Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne and M.A.R. Marikkar, made this order pursuant to a writ petition filed by the founder and chairman of Western Infirmary Hospital, Prof. Rezvi Sheriff. The petitioners are seeking an order in the nature of a writ of mandamus compelling the Director General of Health Services to permit the performance of the surgeries already approved at the hospital.
