Parliamentarians, who were present at the government group meeting, have requested the President to impose a curfew on Sunday, fearing reprisals from the people. Anonymous WhatsApp messages were circulating requesting the people to join a massive protest against the government on Sunday. An unknown party who were organising the protest against the government had requested the people to join the protest in their area..
At the group meeting the President has allowed the Parliamentarians to talk without restrictions where they had expressed these sentiments.
President has asked what would be the next step if the people defy the curfew.
The President has said that we all should work together to resolve the crisis and bring relief to the people.
Prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and Finance minister Basil Rajapksa were also present but refrained from expressing their views. There are fears that disgruntled MP’s would cross the divide when Parlaiment meets next and the President would move to prorogue Parlaiment buying time for negotiations to keep the government intact.
