Family members of a Sri Lankan girl who died in March while in the custody of an immigration center in Japan have filed a criminal caseagainst senior the officials of the facility, accusing them of causing her death bynegligence and failing to provide medical necessary medical assistance.
The treatment meted out to Ratnayake Liyanage Wishma Sandamali, 33, at the Nagoya Regional Immigration facility amounted to deliberate mishandling of the cae, her two younger sisters Poornima and Wayomi, said in a complaint.
The complaint filed by the sisters, states the director has a duty to take appropriate measures when a detainee claims that he or she feelsunwell.They wanted action taken against the Director ,Deputy Director and officials who were on duty on the day
Wishma, who arrived in Japan in 2017 on a student visa, was taken to the facility in Nagoya in August 2020 after overstaying her visa.
She died on March 6 while in custody after complaining of stomach pain and other symptoms from mid-January.
