The National Organiser of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya Women’s Wing, former MP Hirunika Premachandra, and nine others were today granted bail by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court for allegedly committing offences during a protest held in July last year.
Ten suspects, including Hirunika Premachandra, were present before Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage over an incident where they had staged a protest near the President’s official residence in Fort after obstructing police officers from carrying out their duties. Each of the suspects was ordered to be released on a surety bail of one million rupees.
The suspects had launched a protest on July 6, 2022, to show displeasure over the hardships faced by the public due to the economic crisis. Following their arrest by Fort Worth Police, they were released on police bail.
