The relatives of those who have died during suicide bomb attacks at St Sebastian’s Catholic Church in Katuwapitiya, Negombo and individuals who suffered injuries have filed 182 lawsuits so far before Negombo District Court claiming compensations from former President Maithreepala Sirisena and five others.
The plaintiffs have cited former President Mithreepala Sirisena, former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, former DefenceMinistry Secretary Hemasiri Fernando, former IGP Pujith Jayasundara, former Chief of State Intelligence Service Nilantha Jayawardhane and Attorney General as defendants.
The victims alleged that the defendants have failed to perform their official duties entrusted to them to prevent terrorist attacks unleashed on May 21, 2019, which caused an irreparable loss.
Meanwhile, a woman, a resident of Mahahunupitiya in Negombo who was disabled by the suicide attack, has filed a separate case seeking compensation of Rs. 50,000 as damages in lieu of the medical expenses incurred.
