Eleven suspects involved in a plot to assassinate Sumanthiran released
April 13, 2021

Eleven out of fifteen suspects, who were in custody for allegedly plotting to assassinate, TNA Parliamentarian M.A Sumanthiran have been released by the Fort Magistrate’s Court.
The released suspects include notorious underworld gangster Ganemulle Sanjeewa alias Sanjeewa Samararatne and ten others.
The suspects were held under the Prevention of Terrorism Act for nearly two and a half years for plotting to assassinate the Parliamentarian and getting involved in a gun-running operation from the North.
On Monday, the Colombo Crime Division informed the Fort Magistrate’s Court that the Attorney General’s (AG’s) Department has said there was no sufficient evidence to maintain the case against eleven of the fifteen suspects. The other four the AG has, however, said would be prosecuted at a later stage.
Accordingly, the Fort Magistrate moved to release the suspects in custody.
