Former Health Minister Dr PMB Cyril was killed when the elevator of his house at Siribopura in Hambantota crashed.

The accident took place on Sunday when the former minister, 89, entered a temporary elevator with his driver to reach the third floor of his house to inspect the repair activities in progress.

Both of them were later admitted to Hambantota General Hospital. The former minister was pronounced dead after being transferred to Karapitiya Teaching Hospital for further treatment.

Both have been admitted to Hambantota General Hospital for treatment. PMB Cyril, who was in critical condition there, was admitted to Galle Karapitiya Teaching Hospital for further treatment and died last night (25) while receiving treatment.

Dr. P. M. B. Cyril, who entered politics under the leadership of a former president, Mr. J.R. Jayawardene, represented the Tissamaharama Constituency in Hambantota District under the United National Party in 1977. Dr. P. Mr. M. B. Cyril managed to get a parliamentary mandate at that time. After that, Dr. PMB Cyril represented Hambantota from 1977 to 1994.

Before joining politics, he worked as a doctor in almost all the hospitals on the island, including Ambalanthota, Wanduruppa Hospital, Godakawela Hospital, Koslanda, Maskeliya, and Sewanagala, and also ran a private clinic.

After entering politics in 1977, he has worked to fulfil the aspirations of the people of the Hambantota district.

The Lunugamwehera irrigation project, which supplies water to the agricultural lands in the entire area, was his concept. He was also instrumental in building 36 schools in the area, including Suriyawewa Maha Vidyalaya, Badagiriya Maha Vidyalaya, and Rammuduwewa Vidyalaya.

He is the father of five children. All of them are currently abroad. He met with this unexpected accident while he was going to inspect the renovation works on the third floor of his house in the Siribopura area of Hambantota. The driver who was injured in the accident is also receiving treatment at Hambantota General Hospital.
