The Attorney General today informed the Magistrate that despite a Court order, several individuals, including former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and several other politicians, have so far failed to surrender their passports to the court custody.
Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Ayesha Jinasena PC appearing for the CID, made these revelations when the magisterial inquiry into the mob attack on peaceful protesters came up before Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage.
Additional Solicitor General Jinasena said that several individuals, including former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, MP Johnston Fernando, MP Sanath Nishantha, Renuka Perera and Colombo Municipal Council member, Mahinda Kahandagama, had failed so far to surrender their passports to the court custody.
She further said former Minister Johnston Fernando, MP Sanath Nishantha, Renuka Perera and Mahinda Kahandagama had informed CID that their passports had been destroyed by fire while being kept at their residences.
On May 12, Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage had ordered to impose of a travel ban against former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and several others.
