Thirty-seven (37) accused who were held in remand custody in connection with the murder of former Polonnaruwa District SLPP Parliamentarian Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his security officer were today enlarged on bail by the Gampaha High Court Trial-at-Bar.
Each accused was ordered to be released on a cash bail of Rs. 100,000 with four sureties of Rs. 2 million by the Trial-at-Bar bench, comprising high Court Judges Sahan Yapa Bandara, Rushmi Singappuli, and Ruwan Pathirana.
The Chief Justice had nominated a three-member Trial-at-Bar to inquire into the murder of Amarakeerthi Athukorala at the request of the Attorney General.
Former Polonnaruwa District Parliamentarian Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his security officer, Police Sergeant Jayantha Gunawardena, were killed in Nittambuwa town on May 9 last year following the incidents that took place after the attack on Galle Face protesters.
The Attorney General had filed indictments against 41 accused on 14 counts in connection with this incident. Four accused are currently evading court.
