The Fundamental Rights petition filed by the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka seeking an order directing the Minister of Energy to ensure an uninterrupted supply of fuel to the Ceylon Electricity Board was today dismissed by the Supreme Court.
Supreme Court bench comprising Justice Gamini Amarasekara, Justice A.H.M.D Nawaz and Justice Mahinda Samayawardena refused to issue notices to the respondents and dismissed the petition in Limine.
In its petition, the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka also sought an order directing the Finance Minister and Treasury Secretary to immediately allocate USD 200 million to procure fuel to generate electricity.
The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka states that due to the disruption of electricity supply, it has received and continues to receive numerous complaints from the public.
The public had informed the petitioner how such interruptions are affecting the well-being of the citizens.
The petitioner is further seeking an interim order directing the Finance Minister, Treasury Secretary and Central Bank Governor to take all steps forthwith as are necessary to ensure the availability of sufficient financing for the purchase of fuel for the generation of electricity.
