The twelve Fundamental Rights petitions in which former President Maithripala Sirisena and several others were ordered to pay compensation to the victims of Easter Sunday attacks have been listed to be called again on September 15 before a full bench of the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court has listed these petitions to be heard on September 15after taking into consideration the requests made by several parties to these Fundamental Rights petitions.

In a motion dated July 11, 2023, former President Maithripala Sirisena sought further time to pay the remaining sum of Rs. 85 million as compensation to the victims of the Easter Sunday attacks.

The former President had informed the court that he would pay the remaining sum of Rs. 85 million in 10 equal installments of Rs. 8,500,000 per annum, commencing on June 30, 2024, and ending on June 30, 2033.

In a landmark judgement regarding the reckless failure on the part of the executive branch of the government, the Supreme Court on January 12, 2023, ordered former President Maithripala Sirisena, who held the office of the Minister of Defence, to pay a sum of Rs. 100 million as compensation to the victims of the Easter Sunday attacks.

The Supreme Court further ordered former IGP Pujith Jayasundera and former State Intelligence Service (SIS) Director Nilantha Jayawardena to pay Rs. 75 million each as compensation for their failure to perform statutory duties. Former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando was ordered to pay Rs. 50 million. Former Chief of National Intelligence Sisira Mendis was ordered to pay Rs. 10 million as compensation, and the state was ordered to pay Rs. 1 million. The respondents were ordered to pay the compensation out of their personal funds. The Supreme Court held that the state and the respondents must make their payment of compensation to the victim fund maintained at the Office for Reparation.
