The President believed a majority of Parliamentarians were with him when he sacked Ranil Wickremesinghe and appointed Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister. Sirisena and Rajapaksa jointly attended a rally of their supporters to explain their actions, but failed to prevent an interim order being given by the Supreme Court.
