- A debt moratorium is on the cards
- No impeachment or No Confidence Motion
The 41 member government parliamentarians who turned independent met with the President at the President’s House to discuss the current political situation in the country.
The President had told them to nominate a Prime minister and a Cabinet comprising fifteen members to set up an interim administration.
If approved by Parliament, the new arrangement would accrue the necessary political leverage to explore solutions to the current issues.
The President has also told the MPs that they would be required to show the Parliamentary majority.
Meanwhile, the independent group has said they would not support an impeachment or No Confidence against the President or the government. However, they had proposed a 21st amendment to curtail the Presidential powers. The group will also continue talks with the main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya.
The group has also asked the President to envisage a debt moratorium.
The 20th amendment to the constitution gave the President excessive powers that many people opposed.
The Yahapalanaya government trimmed the Presidential powers through the 19th amendment with the approval of almost the whole House.
